Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. She worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of artwork. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of one of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
